End of Internship: Using animation to promote scientific communication

By Lord Cobbinah

Communications Assistant – digital media, Imperial College London
Target Malaria UK

With my internship concluding, I want to thank everyone in the communications team for being very welcoming and supportive of me throughout this internship. I am very grateful and appreciative of the guidance and patience that was shown to me as well. Massive thank you to my Art Director Yann Pablo Corminboeuf for helping me to gain some new and invaluable experience and skills and getting me immersed in different aspects of this role.

During my internship, one of my responsibilities was to create a short animation series and illustrations for Target Malaria’s World Mosquito Day campaign, a project that I found exciting, as I was entrusted with the overall design and outcome of the animations and illustrations. The result is “Mosquito Minutes”, a series of five educational videos that have enabled Target Malaria to share scientific facts about mosquitoes and reach thousands of people on social media.

I also learnt how to effectively speed up my workflow thus making my productions efficient and able to keep up with tight deadlines. Additionally, being exposed to a professional environment has helped with my collaboration and time management skills and boosted my confidence in my creative abilities and skills as a lot of trust and encouragement was given to me throughout the process.

Not only has this internship been a learning experience for me, but also an informative one. As I now have a broader understanding of malaria, mosquitoes and the ongoing research and development of innovative technologies such as gene drive to help hinder the spread of malaria. In truth, I am still fascinated and in awe of what the scientists have been able to achieve and develop. Having a chance to see the labs and the scientists at work felt like something out of a film!

Overall, I am once again thankful and grateful to have been accepted to be part of the communications team and to have had the opportunity to contribute to Target Malaria’s mission and to meet new amazing and encouraging people and get to know them.

I will be following Target Malaria’s journey and wish all the best of luck and success to everyone involved in the fight against malaria.
