Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté among the 100 most influential Africans of 2024

New African Magazine has named Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2024. The list celebrates the achievements and contributions of African personalities from various fields and sectors who have had a positive impact on the continent and the world over the past year.

Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté was distinguished in the Science and Academia. He is described as an “unrelenting warrior against malaria”.

Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté is regarded as a leading figure in malaria research and the application of genetic approaches to malaria control in Africa. He heads the Department of Medical Entomology and Parasitology at the Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS/DRO, Bobo-Dioulasso) in Burkina Faso.
He is also the Principal Investigator of Target Malaria Burkina Faso, a role he has held since joining the initiative in 2012. As a member of the African Academy of Sciences, Professor Diabaté has lectured at prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, encouraging collaboration between the IRSS and international research centres. He received the Royal Society’s Pfizer Prize in 2013 and was awarded the title of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by Burkina Faso for his outstanding contributions to scientific research.
In 2019, Professor Diabaté and his team of eight researchers from the United States and Burkina Faso received the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2024, he gave a talk entitled “How to defeat malaria once and for all” at the annual TED conference in Vancouver. His presentation highlighted the transformative potential of genetic modification of mosquitoes and the progress being made in the fight against malaria on the continent
