World Mosquito Day 2024
Posted 19
August 20th is World Mosquito Day! This year, we launched #MosquitoCountdown, an educational campaign across social media focused on mosquitoes, sharing informative posts from the 6th to the 20th of August across our X, LinkedIn and Facebook pages.
World Mosquito Day is a reminder of mosquitoes’ devastating impact on global health. This day is significant as it commemorates Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that linked female Anopheles mosquitoes to malaria transmission. As we face a significant increase in mosquito-borne diseases worldwide, raising awareness and taking collective action is essential to combat this pressing health challenge.
In the last two years, Target Malaria has conducted educational campaigns aimed at promoting a better understanding of malaria mosquitoes and of genetically modified mosquitoes. In 2022, the campaign focused on explaining mosquito anatomy, characteristics, feeding patterns, reproductive behaviours. In 2023, the campaign focused on explaining how genetically modified mosquitoes are developed.
The main goal of the 2024 campaign is to share educational posts to clarify the distinctions between various mosquito species and the diseases they transmit, specifically Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes, also known as tiger mosquitoes.
From a creative perspective, we designed a variation of our signature digital wax pattern in blue, created for World Malaria Day, and which emulates a traditional African design. The artwork is inspired by the countries that we operate in, and that are primarily affected by the malaria endemic. This version of the design also incorporates scientific illustrations to raise awareness on the lifecycle of the Anopheles mosquito, the contributions of Target Malaria but also other tools to fight malaria such as bednets, insecticide sprays and antimalarial drugs.
