UVRI launches 90th anniversary celebrations

Target Malaria Uganda was privileged to attend the launch of the #UVRIAt90 celebrations held at the Ministry of Health Headquarters in Kampala under the theme “Celebrating 90 Years of Discoveries and Global Impact.” The event marked the beginning of a series of activities leading up to the main anniversary celebrations scheduled for 21–22 July.
The launch brought together key stakeholders in Uganda’s health sector, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, Commissioners, and development partners. The Director General of Health Services, Dr Charles Olaro, represented the Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine, at the ceremony.
In her remarks, Dr Atwine commended the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) for its long-standing and significant contribution to public health in Uganda. She highlighted the institute’s role in disease surveillance, outbreak response, intervention research, and scientific innovation, all of which continue to strengthen the national health system.
Dr Charles Olaro emphasised the importance of research-driven innovation in addressing current and emerging health challenges. The director of UVRI, Professor Pontiano, in his speech, also highlighted UVRI’s leadership in mosquito research, a key area in the fight against vector-borne diseases.
Target Malaria Uganda is proud to collaborate with the Uganda Virus Research Institute in advancing innovative research aimed at developing new tools to combat malaria. We congratulate UVRI on this milestone.
