Target Malaria Uganda recently met with members of the Uganda Biotechnology and Biosafety Consortium (UBBC) at Kolping Hotel in Kampala to share research progress and plans for future project activities.

UBBC brings together policymakers, scientists, private sector leaders, and civil society members, with the goal of promoting stakeholder understanding and support for a strong biosafety regulatory framework and the responsible use of biotechnology to improve livelihoods. Fostering collaboration among biotechnology research and development partners in Uganda is one of its key objectives. It also advocates for the safe, ethical, and sustainable application of biotechnology in key sectors such as agriculture, health, and the environment contributing to national development through innovation that directly benefits communities.

UBBC members welcomed the research progress and emphasized the importance of engaging local communities, assessing potential ecological impacts, and investing in the next generation of Ugandan scientists throughout the research process to sustain innovation. Another key aspect raised was the need to enhance public awareness to address misinformation and build confidence in emerging technologies.

The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) and UBBC reaffirmed their support for Target Malaria’s work, recognizing its alignment with national priorities and its emphasis on ethical stakeholder engagement.

Target Malaria Uganda remains committed to ensuring that all stakeholders are meaningfully involved at every stage of the research process, building trust and shared ownership in the journey toward innovative tools to end malaria for Uganda’s development.
