Target Malaria Uganda participates in PAMCA Kenya 2026
Target Malaria Uganda based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute participated in the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) Kenya Chapter Annual Meeting 2026, that was held from 1–3 September in Nairobi, under the theme “Reconnect and Reimagine Mosquito Control in Africa.”
PAMCA is an African scientific association that brings together researchers, policymakers, public health professionals and practitioners to advance knowledge, collaboration and innovation in mosquito and vector control, malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
Target Malaria Uganda contributed through oral and abstract presentations spanning field entomology, insectary operations research and communications. The oral presentation from field entomology, “Sibship analyses reveal larval habitat size preferences and skip-oviposition behaviour in female Anopheles arabiensis,” explored how gravid females of this species modify their behaviour during oviposition site selection, providing insights into how this knowledge can be harnessed to improve larval source management in controlling mosquito population in the fight against malaria.
The insectary operations abstract, “Establishment of Wildtype and Transgenic Anopheles gambiae Colonies in a Containment Setting: A Foundation for Malaria Vector Control,” highlighted work at UVRI’s Arthropod Containment Level 2 facility, focusing on establishing and maintaining wildtype and transgenic mosquito colonies and assessing their life-history characteristics and fitness. The communications abstract, “Leveraging Social Media Advertising to Improve Gender Equity in Malaria Research Communication,” examined audience reach through Facebook advertising and approaches to improve equitable access to malaria research information.
Through research, collaboration and stakeholder engagement, Target Malaria Uganda continues to contribute to Africa’s malaria research agenda. These efforts support the development of innovative vector control tools that can complement existing malaria interventions. By working with researchers and partners across Africa, we contribute to the shared vision of a future free from malaria.
