Driven to end malaria: join our World Day Malaria campaign

Together we can end malaria!
The World Health Organization’s 2025 World malaria report notes that since 2000, 2.3 billion malaria cases and 14 million deaths have been averted worldwide — including 1 million lives saved in 2024 alone. Progress toward global elimination has continued, with 47 countries and one territory now officially certified as malaria‑free by the WHO. Despite these gains, malaria remains a major global health challenge, with an estimated 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths in 2024.
The WHO African Region continues to bear the greatest burden. Eleven countries account for about two‑thirds of global cases and deaths, and progress in reducing the malaria mortality rate remains far off track. An estimated 95% of global malaria deaths occurred in the region, with most among children under 5.
New evidence published in Science also highlights the long‑term consequences of severe malaria. Children who survived cerebral malaria or severe malaria‑related anemia scored lower on cognitive tests and math achievement years after infection. More than 1 million children experience these severe forms of malaria each year, according to the report.
We need new tools to help end malaria, and this World Malaria Day, we are opening our labs through a mix of animations, lab footage and interviews with Target Malaria researchers that will be published on all our platforms.
We are also making available a toolkit, including the hero film of the Gene Drive video series: Why are we developing gene drive mosquitoes to control malaria in Africa?. The toolkit also includes social media sample posts, info cards, video capsules and key messages on malaria and on gene drive research. The assets are available for download in the following languages: English, French, Italian, Luganda, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili.
