It is with great pleasure that I announce that my colleague Krystal Birungi of Target Malaria Uganda at the Uganda Virus Research Institute has been awarded the 2026 Global Citizen Prize.
The Global Citizen Prize seeks to identify and celebrate grassroots activists in local communities who are fighting for social justice, championing the most vulnerable, and taking action across Global Citizen’s core issue themes. Through her work today, Krystal champions voices affected by malaria and advocates for investments in stronger health systems and malaria research.
Recognized as a 2025 Obama Foundation Africa Leader and Goalkeepers Champion[MD1] , Krystal strikes as a passionate champion for African‑led solutions to global health challenges, amplifying voices in support of sustained funding to the Global Fund and children survival[MD2] .
