ASTMH 2025: Advancing Gene Drive Conversations

The  American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene  (ASTMH) Annual Meeting is the world’s leading forum for tropical medicine and global health. This year, for the first time, it was held outside the U.S., in Toronto, Canada, bringing together thousands of experts to share research and foster collaboration.

The meeting featured vibrant discussions on malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and emerging tools like spatial emanators and multi-stage vaccines. Target Malaria was proud to co-host a symposium with GeneConvene entitled “Gene Drive Mosquitoes for Malaria Control: Planning for Field Trials.” The session featured speakers from FNIH, WMP, and Transmission Zero as well as our own John Connolly, and was chaired by Damaris Matoke-Muhia (KEMRI).

The audience engaged deeply, asking critical questions on risk assessment and stakeholder engagement—signaling growing awareness of gene drive technology. Our session was important to highlight innovative genetic approaches to malaria elimination.

ASTMH remains an essential space for connecting science to impact, and Target Malaria is committed to advancing conversations that shape the future of vector control.
