Target Malaria Uganda participated in the External Validation and Dissemination of the Uganda Malaria Programme Review (MPR) Report and Signing of the Aide Memoir. The meetings, hosted by the WHO Uganda Country Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, brought together technical experts, development partners, and stakeholders to validate the MPR findings and shape Uganda’s next malaria strategic plan.

The external validation process centered on reviewing and confirming the findings of Uganda’s Malaria Programme Review (MPR) report. Discussions focused on key thematic areas, including epidemiological and entomological impact assessments, malaria surveillance systems, case management (diagnosis and treatment), and integrated vector management. The primary objective of the week-long workshop was to validate and disseminate the MPR findings and to reach consensus on key recommendations to guide future malaria control efforts in Uganda.

Key highlights of the meetings

Discussions on Integrated Vector Management (IVM) emphasized the limitations of relying solely on Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) highlighting the need for complementary tools. With further research and risk assessment, embracing innovations like gene drive technology can help fill critical gaps and strengthen national efforts towards building a more resilient and forward-looking malaria elimination strategy.

The workshop was concluded with the signing of the Aide Memoir; a formal commitment to strengthen malaria elimination efforts in Uganda.
