What do you do with Target Malaria, and what do you enjoy about your work?
I’m a Statistics and GIS Officer with Target Malaria Uganda at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI). My work involves using mathematical models and simulations to test the effectiveness of novel malaria vector control tools before deployment. I’m fascinated by different aspects of malaria mosquito biology, especially those that are responsible for how different mosquito species rebound at the start of every wet season and how they survive throughout the dry seasons.
What motivated you to enter this line of work?
Following the research study I undertook on using spatial models to determine pathogen distribution during my MSc. attachment, I was inspired to also use mathematical models and simulations in decision-making science. Using these tools in population genetics is a challenge worth undertaking and makes it possible to understand how complex interactions and processes work in malaria mosquito populations.
Who are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by Dr. Christine Nabiryo, a public health specialist working with PATH, a global health organization, as the African region’s Technical strategy and business director. She is an embodiment of hard work, determination and excellence. Through her mentorship, I have become more proficient in juggling career, family and personal growth while giving every opportunity I get my very best.
Do you have any advice to other Young Scientists?
I advise young scientists to keep going even when it looks like the end is not in sight. And like Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity”.
