In 2023, there were 263 million new cases of malaria and 95% of all malaria cases are in the WHO African Region.

Malaria was in decline during the 1960s—until progress came to a halt. In 1969, global elimination efforts were abandoned, leading to the loss of millions of lives. It took three decades for the world to rally once more against this deadly disease. We must not let history repeat itself. In the late 1990s, the global community renewed its commitment to malaria, helping to prevent an estimated 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths over the past two decades. However, after years of consistent progress, momentum has stalled. (WHO

This year’s World Malaria Day falls during the 8th replenishment of the Global Fund, the main funder of malaria interventions globally. It is crucial to keep the Global Fund resourced to ensure we keep saving lives. The Global Fund launched its Investment Case on February 18, 2025:

“For our Eighth Replenishment, the Global Fund needs US$18 billion to save 23 million lives between 2027 and 2029, reduce the combined mortality rate by another 64%, relative to 2023 levels, and prevent around 400 million infections. It took the world 18 years to halve the combined death toll from AIDS, TB and malaria; with the right resources we can more than halve it again in only six years. Every life lost is one too many, but to be able to reduce the death toll from AIDS, TB and malaria from 2.3 million in 2023 to under 1 million in 2029 would be an immense achievement.”

We are joining the call to pledge to support the Global Fund and the malaria community and raise awareness of the risk of increased malaria cases and deaths because of less funding and galvanise the public to encourage its policymakers to invest in malaria existing and new tools.

Our campaign for World Malaria Day is showcasing our commitment to helping end malaria as a united team from all over the world #OneWorldOneFight. It’s time to recommit to ending malaria. With the existing tools and new innovations, we are hopeful that together, we can end malaria.
