New communications intern

Posted 4th July 2024 by Zainab Shire

I am delighted to join the communications team as their new intern, through the 10,000 Black Interns programme

I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Birmingham, about to begin my final year studying Policy, Politics, and Economics. Studying this degree has allowed me to explore many different avenues and acquire a wide range of skills, which I look forward to applying in my new role.

I have recently returned from an exchange year in South Korea, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture and make lasting connections. During my time in Asia, I also volunteered with an NGO called HELO School in Cambodia, where I taught English.

I have been the newsletter editor for Empowered by Vee for the last two years, a non-profit organisation aiming to widen access to higher education by restoring students’ confidence, founded by Vee Kativhu. Vee is an award-winning girls’ education activist and empowerment YouTuber with a following of 300,000. In this role, I publish and monitor our monthly newsletter and blog posts.

Being of Somali heritage, I deeply appreciate the challenges faced by communities impacted by malaria and the efforts being made to eliminate this disease. I look forward to contributing to and learning more about this important work.
