{"id":1975,"date":"2020-08-03T08:59:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T07:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2023-08-23T14:11:08","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T13:11:08","slug":"what-is-covid-19-teaching-us-about-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/fr\/latest\/blog\/what-is-covid-19-teaching-us-about-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"What is COVID-19 teaching us about sustainable development?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sustainabledevelopment.report\/2020\/2020_sustainable_development_report.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sustainable Development Report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f analyses the impact of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19 pandemic on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rather than <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">just reporting progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">world is facing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">worst public health and economic cris<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s in a century. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pandemic <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is having<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">severe negative <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on most <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the goals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, mainly threatening the progress made <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">towards <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decreasing poverty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, inequality, hunger<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and increasing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">well-being and economic growth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in recent years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impact is not the same among countries or individuals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> one thing is clear:<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">no one is exempt.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"430\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Picture-blog-Monday3rdAugust.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Picture-blog-Monday3rdAugust.png 430w, https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Picture-blog-Monday3rdAugust-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The scenario is still unstable, and we cannot predict the future. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the key messages of the report<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is \u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">no one will be safe until all countries have robust health systems<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The pandemic is showing how unprepared we are to address a health crisis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of this magnitude<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The situation is more critical in developing countries where resources are scarce, and health care systems are overloaded by diseases that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are easily preventable and treated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in higher-income countries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as malaria.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The report shows that b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esides strengthening health care systems, it is also necessary to invest in better measur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and reporting to prevent disease<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> outbreaks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Asian countries registered greater progress in the SDGs ranking since its adoption in 2015<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interesting to note that most of the countries in the region <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">managed the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">coronavirus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> outbreak better <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other parts of the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">9 is a challenge of global proportions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e will not overcome it without collaborative efforts. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Solidarity and partnerships are critical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to prevent, mitigate and recover from the pandemic\u2019s economic and social impact. The report <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">already <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identifies key measures <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to guide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cooperation <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">avert future disruptive events<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nvestments <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n new drugs and vaccines are vital<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the authors highlighted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our team at Target Malaria is highly conscious that e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xisting tools and methods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to manage infectious diseases will not enable us to eradicate them. In the case of malaria, insecticides and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bed nets significantly contributed to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in malaria cases<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">worldwide. However, they <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not able to eradicate the disease<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Last year, malaria killed over 400,000 people. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ncreasing d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rug and insecticide resistance<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> not making the battle any easier.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gene drive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for mosquito contr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ol<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a tool that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Target Malaria has decided <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to explore. If we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">win the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fight against malaria, we reduce the burden on health care system<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and free<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> resources to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">combat <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other diseases.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While we adapt to the \u201cnew normal\u201d, countries are struggling to put their economies back on track and avoid new outbreaks. We are having the chance of a lifetime to design the society and future we want, as it notably says the report.
