While recent World Malaria Reports indicate positive trends towards reducing malaria cases, they caution that progress towards zero malaria remains slow and accelerated change is necessary.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The next decade 2020-2030 is a crucial one as many commitments made in the last decade<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">to eliminate the disease <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are working with a 2030 deadline<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This include<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the 2018 high-level Malaria Summit in London, Heads of State and Government, scientists, business leaders, philanthropists and other global health stakeholders renewed their commitment to eradicate the disease, including a US$4.1 billion collective fund as well as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malariasummit.com\/pdfs\/rtb_committments.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">new commitment<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to halve malaria cases by 2023 and a 90% reduction of cases by 2030.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the same summit, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">WHO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> also urged leaders, especially in high-burden countries, to take ownership at country level<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">build strong health systems including focused investments in primary health care. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On his part, Bill Gates called for continued investment in research and development and noted that \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we have to keep innovating to control malaria, because conditions evolve,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he mosquito and the parasite develop resistance to the interventions we use to fight them.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2019 marked another crucial year for the fight as more tangible action was witnessed.<br><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Global Fund<\/span><\/a>\u00b9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/news\/2019-12-18-highest-ever-funding-allocations-announced-to-fight-aids-tb-and-malaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> its largest-ever funding allocations for eligible countries to fight AIDS, TB and malaria. This included US$12.71 billion for country allocations and US$890 million for catalytic investments &#8211; 23% more than the previous three-year period. The funds are expected to help save 16 million lives and cut the mortality rate for the three diseases by half, avert 234 million new cases and \u201cget the world back on track to end the three epidemics by 2030\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the area of research and development, the WHO Strategic advisory group on malaria eradication published a set of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications-detail\/strategic-advisory-group-malaria-eradication-executive-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">key findings and recommendations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in August 2019<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">identified a renewed R&amp;D agenda as \u201cone of the highest priorities in efforts to achieve the vision of a malaria-free\u201d world. The advisory group calls for better tools and approaches including novel interventions to complement the \u201cold and imperfect\u201d current tools for vector control. Building on this report, the WHO recently published the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/rest\/bitstreams\/1275142\/retrieve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Malaria eradication: benefits, future scenarios &amp; feasibility<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d, reaffirming the organization\u2019s commitment to eliminate the disease and reminding us that a malaria-free world is yet possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Within the first quarter of 2020, great milestones have been recorded. In early January, it was<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/endmalaria.org\/news\/2-billion-mosquito-nets-delivered-worldwide-2004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that 2 billion mosquito<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">nets<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">had been distributed worldwide since 2004. This great achievement<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflects the global effort to \u201cboost funding, pioneer, produce and deliver the insecticide-treated mosquito nets to millions of vulnerable families around the world\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In March, the new Chair of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alma2030.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">African Leaders Malaria Allianc<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alma2030.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a> (ALMA), HE President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/endmalaria.org\/news\/president-kenyatta-new-chair-african-leaders-malaria-alliance-alma-outlines-his-priorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> his four priorities with the aim of ridding the continent of malaria by 2030. The four ambitious areas of action (which gained immediate support of the African Union and the RBM Partnership CEO) are:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">igitization and real time data to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> provide <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real time access to malaria-related data at country level to enhance malaria prevention and elimination efforts;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Engagement with regional economic blocs in Africa to urge Heads of State and Government to address key challenges and provide solutions in the fight against malaria;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Establishment of at least 15 new End Malaria Councils and Funds to boost high-level, multi-sectoral engagement and advocacy at country level while increasing domestic resource mobilization;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creation of a Youth Advisory Group \u2018Malaria Youth Army\u2019 to champion youth engagement and resource commitments for malaria eliminatio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n.<br><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"><br><\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-1024x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4790\" width=\"552\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-1024x726.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-768x544.jpg 768w, https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-1536x1089.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BUR_CATCH_02-retouched-2048x1451.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><figcaption>Preparation for mosquito morning catch with spray in Bana Village, Bobo Dioulasso &#8211; Burkina Faso.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><br>The fight against malaria started 2020 in full steam, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">affected dramatically the efforts underway and has been posing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">great threat to malaria fight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> efforts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Activities planned for World Malaria Day this year had to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adapt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to new policies and guidelines <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in order to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> avoid the spread of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">coronavirus. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition, several events to raise awareness <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the importance of eradicating <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the disease <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">set the path to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> achiev<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a malaria-free world are being postponed. The Kigali Summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases, previously schedule<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for June 25, is just one of them. On top of that, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">significant <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esources are being <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diverted to mitigate the effects, prevent and treat COVID-19.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The current global health crisis only proves the importance of access to universal health care and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">investment in strong health systems \u2013 as well noted this year\u2019s campaign for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/endmalaria.org\/worldmalariaday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">World Malaria Day<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The COVID-19 pandemic represents an additional burden to health care systems, especially in developing countries. It threatens malaria prevention and treatment programmes. If disrupted, we could see 20 years of progress going to waste, bringing us back to the same malaria mortality rate registered in the year 2000 (see this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/rest\/bitstreams\/1275527\/retrieve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">WHO report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">). We are living difficult times, and resources are scarce. However, our fight cannot stop! We should work together to ensure that the world is ready to address well-known and new diseases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><sub>\u00b9 The Global Fund is the largest source of external funding for malaria initiatives accounting for 65% of all international financing for malaria, and has invested more than US$12.5 billion in malaria control programs as at December 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/malaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.theglobalfund.org\/en\/malaria\/<\/a><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2010-2020 decade witnessed a renewed call for action to scale up the fight against malaria.
